Vietnam war era U.S. Naval School Underwater Swimmers plaque

Vietnam war era U.S. Naval School Underwater Swimmers plaque. This group was based in Key West, Florida, and welcomed its first class in 1954 and trained over 6000 divers before officially closing it doors in l973. Students came from all branches of the U.S. military, from several civilian government departments, and from allied forces. This school trained many Navy Seals, Marine Recon and EOD soldiers. The medallion on this plaque features a diver riding a shark and appears to be bronze, measures 6” in diameter and is very heavy. The plaque itself is 10” by 12” and has a pull out prop stand in the back of it. No maker’s marks or labels and I don’t know my woods that well, so I am unsure what type of wood was used.

SMAG Plaque  MIS-001

Original SMAG (Special Mission Advisory Group) plaque piece.  Back in the late 70s and early 80s Tom Clinton was traveling all over southeast Asia for his computer business. He was also a collector of Vietnam War memorabilia. In his travels, he came across a batch of original plaques, CCN,CCC, CCS, SMAG etc. where the plaques were rotten but the plaque pieces themselves were still good. He had the pieces pulled off the plaques and shipped them back to the US.  (He also found SOG bolos and presentation stilettos etc.) If and when you can find these plaques, they fetch $1500 and up even when unnamed. Here is your chance to buy an original piece for a fraction of that. Item makes  great display piece as well.
